Today being on Easter Friday and I woke with rather different vibes. I would have loved a long drive to Kitui but i found myself Jamming to Suzanna Owiyo Nyar kisumu Nyako ber kabisa. while this brings about nostalgia, it triggers some memories in the past- reminiscing to the old times.
Growing up, especially on weekends and holidays, looking after livestock in the vast fields was really awesome. This was all fun until some notorious gangs jumped over to the neighbor's shambas and had a change of the diet. talking about this will give me a PSTD but regardless, I still love you mom.
With time, I started carrying a radio to kill the boredom as i was growing fast past those childish escapades, I was in pursuit of Information out here and connecting to the outside world. One thing though, the Paka Power batteries were hard to find and listening to radio nearly the whole day required extra mechanisms and innovations put in place. that's when my Engineering Intuition was realized - quite interesting.
One evening over the radio i heard something quite different. A song that caught my attention!, I only knew Kisumu as the capital center for Nyanza province but why is a lady mentioning it in a song?. Honestly i didn't understand a single word from the song but every evening i would wait until the song gets played and i could mumble a few words every time( UPDATE, listening to the song now i can understand nearly everything). I would be left in awe, trying to just visualize how that town is, how it borders the lake, how does a lake even look like?. i honestly fell in love with Kisumu.
Fast forward while in Form 2 (2008) I joined the Music group which we qualified for the Nationals( Mr. Mukeke big up). Apparently, they were held in Kisumu girls and Boys schools. This was a dream come true. Despite being under strict rules while there, I managed to peep and satisfy my curiosity. hata sikumbuki the position we held at the Nationals.
8 years later in 2016 we found our way to Kisumu for an Engineering trip while in campus. Now, an adult, I was free to roam freely. I would say nearly all my curiosity was satisfied and cured. The bicycle rides, Lwang'ni, boat rides, Nam Lolwe, just to mention a few were really a great experience.
Currently I stay in kisumu and this is just the ultimate experience. Just name a joint, street, Mpesa shop, lake shore and i will there in no time.
Wacha hata nifike Black Pearl, see you later y'all.
I will attach some few photos for posterity.
